Ithaca, N.Y. – Women’s tennis players Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and Dani Fancher (St. Louis, Mo.) won singles championships for the Thoroughbreds at this weekend’s NYS women’s tennis championships in Ithaca.
Mendoza defeated Joy Backer of Vassar 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the finals of the third singles bracket and Fancher beat Vassar’s Elizabeth Anderson 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to win the fourth singles championship.
Mendoza opened strong with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alfred’s Autumn McLain and went on to defeat Rensselaer’s Zosia Casterline 6-1, 6-2 and NYU’s Liz Feldman 6-3, 6-0 before winning her finals match. Fancher beat Abbey Goings of Nazareth 6-0, 6-0 and Jamie Bow of Rochester 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) en route to her victory in the fourth singles finals.
Brittany Trimble (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) reached the finals in the fifth singles bracket and Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.), Laura Attley (Chatham, N.J.) and Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) all reached the semifinals in their respective brackets. Trimble defeated Sarah Hollis of Ithaca 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals but fell to Vassar’s Jennifer Ruther in the finals 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Robison and Mendoza combined to reach the finals of the first doubles bracket. Robison and Mendoza defeated Nunez/Nunez of Ithaca 8-3 in the semifinals but lost a hard fought 8-6 match in the finals to Backer/Pontee of Vassar. Both of Skidmore’s other doubles teams reached the quarterfinals in their brackets. Attley and Fancher fell to Bow/Schreck of Rochester 8-5 in second doubles and Engros and Trimble fell to Cary/Wilkins of Nazareth 8-5 in third doubles.
