Syracuse, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College women’s swimming and diving team had an impressive first day at the UNYSCA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by LeMoyne College at Nottingham High School.

The Thoroughbreds are in 11th place in the 16-team event. Ithaca College is the early leader. The meet continues Friday and will conclude on Saturday.

Sonia Segal-Smith finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5;20.16. She set a new college record in the prelims of 5:15.69. Also in the 500, Elaine Burns swam consistently, going 5;27.91 to finish 22nd.

The 400 medley relay of Alena Chubet, Sonia Segal-Smith, Kelsey Carson and Heather Friedman broke the Skidmore record, finishing 11th with a time of 4:12.94.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Heather Friedman, Suzanna Lourie, Elaine Burns and Carrie Koch finished 12th with a time of 1:44.46, a full second faster than the prelims.

In the 200 IM, Kelsey Carson, dropped over 1.5 seconds finals (2:15.78) to finish 18th.
