Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men’s basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Union 83-77 in Tuesday night’s Liberty League matchup at the Sports and Recreation Center. With the win, the Thoroughbreds remain tied for first with a 6-2 league and 13-6 overall record, while the Dutchmen fall to 5-3 in the league and 9-9 overall.
Sophomore Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and also had five assists to lead Skidmore. Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) poured in 14 off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting beyond the arc and Terron Victoria added 13. Jeff Altimar (Medford, Mass.), John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Raoul Oloa (Yaounde, Cameroon) each chipped in with eight points for the Thoroughbreds.
The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half; Skidmore held a six point lead in the first minute and Union held a seven point lead with 9:36 remaining but neither side was able to pull away and the Thoroughbreds took a 40-38 lead into halftime.
Skidmore came out strong in the second half and were able to push their lead to 10 on a layup from Clark with 14:12 remaining. The Dutchmen went on an 8-0 run and cut the lead to two on a three-pointer from Keven Donohue, but the Thoroughbreds answered back with a 15-0 run highlighted by back-to-back threes from Langyintuo and built the lead to 17 points. Union outscored Skidmore 19-8 over the final 9:12 but was never able to get closer than five points.
Donohue led the way for Union, scoring a game-high 26 points (18 in 1st half) on 9-of-14 shooting and 4-of-6 for three. Drew Goldstein added 17 points, while Joey Lokitis had 10 and Matt Covucci scored eight and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Dutchmen.
