Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women’s basketball improved to 7-1 in the league with Tuesday’s 63-47 victory over Union in Liberty League action at the Sports and Recreation Center. The Thoroughbreds are 15-3 overall, while the Dutchwomen fall to 6-12 overall and 4-4 league.
Sophomore Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Thoroughbreds. Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) added 10 points while Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) had nine points, nine rebounds and three steals and Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) chipped in with eight off the bench for Skidmore.
The game was tied with 11:40 remaining before the Thoroughbreds went on a 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back threes from Gaugler and Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and were able to take a 27-16 lead into the half.
Skidmore came out in the second half and were able to build their lead up to 16, but Union Started to chip away and cut the lead down to five points on a Megan Clark layup with 10:30 remaining. The Thoroughbreds came right back and pushed their lead back to 13 on a layup from Harper and back-to-back three’s from Gaugler and closed it out with a 16 point victory.
Clark led the way for the Dutchwomen with 12 points. Lauren McCormick and Shayla Madden each chipped in with eight points for Union.
Skidmore outscored the Dutchwomen 20-8 in the paint and made 12-of-15 free throws compared to 5-of-6 for Union.
The Thoroughbreds will return to action on Feb. 5 at Hamilton.
