Liberty League honors women’s basketball

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Three members of the Skidmore College women's basketball team and the coaching staff were honored with end of the year awards from the Liberty League on Thursday.
Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) was a unanimous First Team selection, while Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) received Honorable Mention. Head Coach Darren Bennett and staff received Coaching Staff of the Year.
Harper, a three-time Co-Guard of the Week, led the Thoroughbreds with 14.2 points, 3.0 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.0 block per game. She was the leading scorer in 15 of 24 games this season and in an overtime victory at Vassar, she became the 11th player in Skidmore history to record 1,000 career points.
Gaugler averaged a team-high 31.5 minutes per game and ranks second on the Thoroughbreds in points (9.5), assists (2.9), and steals (2.1) per game. She was named Co-Guard of the Week on February 15 after averaging 12.0 points and recording single-game career highs with nine rebounds and eight assists.
Leonard led Skidmore and ranked sixth in the league with 6.9 rebounds per game while averaging 7.4 points per game. She was named Co-Forward of the Week on December 7, 2009 and led the team in rebounding in 12 of 24 games.
Bennett was a unanimous choice after leading the Thoroughbreds to its first Liberty League regular season title and only the second 20-win season in school history, one win shy of tying the Skidmore record for most wins in a season. He is assisted by Tom Coons and Mandee Nann.
The Thoroughbreds finished the regular season with a 20-4 overall and 12-2 league record. They are the #1 seed and will host this weekend's upcoming Liberty League Tournament. They host Hamilton at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26; the game will be preceded by St. Lawrence and RPI at 6 p.m.
