Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College hockey team lost to the University of New England 5-3 in Friday night’s ECAC East matchup at the Saratoga City Rink. The Thoroughbreds fall to 7-12-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the league, while the Nor’easters improve to 2-17 overall and 1-13 league.
Freshman Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Academy) got the scoring started early in the first for Skidmore, when he beat New England keeper Dallas Ungurian six seconds into the power play for his sixth goal of the season at the 2:44 mark.
After trailing 1-0 after the first, the Nor’easters came out strong in the second, tying it up on a power play goal of their own from Jake Moscatel at the 3:08 mark and took the lead when Jack Nolin found Justin Miner in front of the net and he beat Thoroughbred goalie John Bienkowski (Lexington, Mass./Hoosac School) at the 13:27 mark. New England got their third goal of the period from Scott McManaman at the 18:54 mark to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
The Nor’easters made it 4-1 on a power play goal from Tyler Fleurent 3:16 in the period, but Skidmore got back into the game after a 4-on-3 power play goal from Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons) at 6:01 and a goal from Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) at 8:56 to get within one at 4-3.  The Thoroughbreds outshot New England 22-5 in the final period but couldn’t find a way to tie it up as the Nor’easters put it away with an empty net goal from Moscatel at 19:38 in the final period.
Skidmore outshot New England 42-21. Bienkowski stopped 12 of 15 shots and Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) made three saves on four shots in relief for the Thoroughbreds. Ungurian stopped 39 of 42 shots for the Nor’easters.
Skidmore finished 2-of-6 on the power play and totaled 14 penalty minutes, while New England was 2-for-5 with the man-advantage and had 16 penalty minutes.
The Thoroughbreds return to action tomorrow, when they host Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
