Skidmore hosts National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Skidmore College hosted its 4th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, February 6 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
The celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Skidmore College's campus has become larger and larger in each of its four years.   This year featured 117 girls in grades 3 through 8 participating in clinics and lunch with 82 Skidmore student-athletes helping throughout the day and ended with the opportunity to watch a Skidmore women's swimming and diving invitational.
“Our aim is to expose the participants to various sport opportunities and encourage their participation in sports” said Kelly Schwarz, event coordinator and Skidmore softball coach. “I heard several of the girls talking about a sport that they had never tried before and how excited they were to learn more about it.  If one girl begins playing because of her exposure here, then I feel it's been a success.”
Ruby Grande from the Philosophy & Religion, Classics & Asian Studies department had the following to say about the day, "I just wanted to pass on the wonderful reviews I heard about your program on Saturday.   My granddaughter had a wonderful time and was thrilled to be introduced to not only different sports, but she said the girls she worked with were GREAT.   Many thanks for your wonderful addition to the community."
With the event, Skidmore aims to raise awareness of women's athletics on the Skidmore College campus and in the community through celebrating the achievements of girls and women in sport, expose girls and women to various sports opportunities and encourage their participation in sport and celebrate 38 years of Title IX.
