Kissimmee, Fla. – The Skidmore College softball team earned a split on day two of the Rebel Spring games in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Rutgers-Newark 6-5 in the opener and falling to Nichols 6-9 in game two.
In game one,
Julia Schwartz picked up the first win of her collegiate career in the Rutgers-Newark game, pitching in relief of
Sam Crose. Schwartz entered the game in the fifth inning with one out and only gave up two hits while striking out two in the victory. Schwartz also contributed on the offensive side, hitting a long home run over the centerfield fence, giving the Skidmore offense the spark it needed. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh,
Michelle Anderson and
Christina Gargiso both singled to start the inning and
Lauren Tobias loaded the bases for the Thoroughbreds when she was hit by a pitch. Schwartz again came up big for the Thoroughbreds, driving a single to leftfield scoring Anderson and cutting the Rutgers-Newark lead to one. Senior
Lauren Dinsdale stepped into the box and drove a walk-off double to deep centerfield to secure the win for the Thoroughbreds. Dinsdale finished the game going 4-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI's.
The second game of the day saw the Thoroughbreds in a tight contest with Nichols College. Pitcher
Molly Canavan started the game for the Thoroughbreds and was relieved by
Abby Fuhrman. After the teams exchanged runs back and forth, the Thoroughbreds were tied with the Bisons 5-5 at the end of the fourth. In the fifth inning, Gargiso drove a single to center, scoring
Tara DeGeorge and putting the Thoroughbreds ahead 6-5. Nichols came back in the bottom of the sixth loading the bases and driving a single to left to put the Bison's ahead for good.
Skidmore improved their record to 3-1. The Thoroughbreds are back in action on Tuesday facing Nazareth at 1PM and Spring Arbor at 5PM.
