Skidmore riders punch ticket to Nationals with Zone Championship

The Skidmore Riding Team rode to a decisive victory at the IHSA, Zone II Championships at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ putting them in a strong position going into Nationals. Skidmore riders dominated the team competition, winning six of eight team classes and earning a final score of 50 points. Centenary College, with a home court advantage, came in second with 38 points. Cazenovia College finished third with 36 points, followed by St. Joseph's College with 28 points.

The Open riders competed first, with co-captain Elizabeth Kigin '10 and Flavia D'Urso '13 riding in the Individual Over Fences. D'Urso won reserve champion, allowing her to advance to Nationals as an individual. Kigin competed in Team Over Fences, giving Skidmore their first win of the day. She will also be competing at Nationals in the prestigious Cacchione Cup with 31 of the top Open Collegiate riders in the country.

The individual Intermediate Over Fences started with Kelly Campbell '12 winning sixth place. Chelsea Jones '12 put in a solid round to win the Team Over Fences, adding seven points to Skidmore's score. Jones also competed in Individual Novice Over Fences and placed sixth. For the team, Laura Roberts '10 competed on a difficult horse to receive third place.

The afternoon began with the Individual Open Flat. Skidmore riders Campbell and Kigin placed first and third respectively and will both advance to Nationals. Campbell followed her individual win with a champion ride in the Open team flat. In the individual Intermediate Flat Grier Filley '10 placed second and will also advance to Nationals. Jones, the only Skidmore rider to compete for the team over fences and on the flat, won the individual Intermediate Team Flat. Hanae Kimura '11 won team Novice Flat. In individual Walk Trot Canter Alexandra McGuire '11 rode beautifully and won her class, and Maria Lorenc '11 placed fifth. McGuire will compete at Nationals. Isabella McKeon '12 added seven points to the team total with her win, and Cecelia Culp '11 finished the day with a third place in team Walk Trot.

Five time National Champion Skidmore College was most recently Reserve Champion at Nationals in 2008 and fifth in 2009. The riders will compete with nineteen other teams from across the country for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National title at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington on May 6th-8th.
