April 13, 2010 - (Poultney, VT) - Skidmore College defeated Green Mountain College in non-conference women's softball action, taking both ends of the double header by scores of 8-0 and 13-9. The Eagles fell to 2-16 on the season, while Skidmore has won eight straight to improve to 16-8.
In the first game, Skidmore took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Carol Brown (Seattle, WA ) tripled to lead off the game and scored on single by
Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, NJ). A double by
Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, PA) put runners on second and third, and Dinsdale came around to score on an error.
Skidmore opened things up in the third, picking up five runs on five hits, all coming with two outs.
Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, NY) had the big blow in the inning, as her two run double opened the floodgates.
Skidmore was led by
Carol Brown who finished 3-3 and two triples, and
Christina Gargiso who went 2-3 at the plate and drove in three of the eight runs for Skidmore. Samantha Crose (Assonet, MA) picked up the win on the mound, yielding three hits in five innings and striking out four without a walk. It was the fourth shutout of the year for Crose (10-5).
Jessica Measheaw (Hammond, NY) took the loss for Green Mountain, falling to 1-8 on the year. Skidmore touched up Measheaw for twelve hits and eight runs, six of which were earned.
In the second game Skidmore opened up a big lead early scoreing five runs in the first, two apiece in the second and third and adding four more in the fourth and held a 13-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Eagles wouldn't give in, holding Skidmore scoreless over the final three and a half innings, while scoring six runs of their own to draw closer. Green Mountain was threatening to close the gap further with runners on second and third when Skidmore brought Samantha Crose into the game. Crose proceeded to strike out the next three batters, ending the threat and the game.
Michelle Anderson (Alfred, NY) led the way for Skidmore in the second game, scoring three runs and collecting three hits,
Molly Canavan (Blue Bell, PA) picked up the win and Crose earned the save.
Green Mountain was led by Karen Davidson Seymour, CT) who finished 2-4 with a run scored and three driven in, and Kristen Belessis (Augusta, NJ) who reached base three times and scored twice. Cass Neimeth-Lazar (Red Hook, NY) took the loss for Green Mountain, falling to 1-8 on the season.
Skidmore will host Cazenovia College on Friday April 16th at 3:30pm.
