A full field of golfers converged on Saratoga National Golf Course in Saratoga Springs on Monday, August 23, to do their part in battling cancer.

Participants from around the country were among 160 golfers taking part in the third annual Teeing Off on Cancer Golf Classic, organized by Skidmore head women’s basketball coach Darren Bennett.

The event raised over $34,000 for Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society, helping to support cancer research and raise awareness of the disease. Longtime supporters Mary and Rich Flaherty of the Flaherty Family Foundation were honorary chairs of this year’s event.

The sold-out classic welcomed area coaches as well as a range of civic and business leaders and golf enthusiasts. Golfers came from all over New York, Connecticut, and even Kentucky for the event.

"Those that have been touched by cancer know first hand about its effects and are very passionate and generous when it comes to fighting back and looking for ways to help,” said Bennett. “We’ve been able to attract an energized and enthusiastic group of people who have contributed to the positive momentum of the event, and we had a sensational day."

Added Bennett, “One motivation behind organizing the tournament is to honor the lives of loved ones who have battled this ruthless disease. The organizing committee has dedicated a section of the program to the valiant efforts of those currently afflicted and to remember fondly those that have been taken from us.”

The organizers encouraged other supporters beyond the competing golfers to join them at Saratoga National for the post-competition cocktail reception. The event offered raffles, contests, and silent and live auctions, as well as donation drop boxes, to raise additional funds. Auction items included sports memorabilia, event tickets, dining and lodging experiences, merchandise, and gear.

Bennett, who helped launch the event three years ago, conceptualized the tournament and put together a team of local business and community leaders to help implement it. This years’ event was timed to take place on the Monday before the famed Travers Stakes at the Saratoga Race Course, to take advantage of the excitement and enthusiasm rippling through the city.
