Skidmore takes Tim Brown Invite by 19 strokes

Results

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— The 19th ranked Skidmore College golf team shot 287-296--583 to win the Tim Brown Invitational by 19 strokes, Monday at the par-72 Saratoga Spa State Park Course. The nine teams played all 36 holes on Monday.

Liberty League teams took the top three places with Rochester finishing second with 296-306—602, one stroke ahead of Rensselaer at 301-302—603.

Thoroughbred freshman Zach Grossman shot 67-73—140 to win by one stroke over Grant Rosener of RPI, who shot 74-67—141. Grossman's five-under-par morning round featured seven birdies an only two bogies.

Nick Paladino (72-73—145) of Rochester was third, one stroke ahead of Skidmore's John McCarthy (72-74—146).

Also for the Thoroughbreds, Anthony DiLisio (73-75—148) and Scott Pinder (78-70—148) tied for fifth. Garrett Colgan was seventh 78-74—152.

"The team played a solid brand of golf today," said Skidmore first-year coach Josh Cupp. "At times our play featured electrifying stuff with scores of birdies and at other times I saw countless par saves that are so important in keeping momentum on our side. As a team, they showed me an awful lot. To say I am proud of their effort on such a long day is a vast understatement.

Cupp was impressed with Grossman's play, "I wish I could say I recruited Zach, but I cannot. Like our team's play, he had moments when he couldn't miss a shot and he capitalized with a sensational four birdie in a row stretch in the first round. I might be more impressed with his ability to take care of his golf ball when he hits it poorly. Not many people can get the ball in the hole like Mr. Grossman. I hope his win is the first of many. "

Skidmore will compete in the Middlebury College Duke Nelson Invitational Sept. 17-18.
