Thoroughbred streak ends at William Smith

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.— William Smith won the battle of nationally ranked women's soccer teams with a 2-0 Liberty League decision over Skidmore, Saturday at Cozzens Field.
 
Both teams entered the game with double digit unbeaten streaks, Skidmore had its 13-game unbeaten streak end, while William Smith extended its win streak to 12 games.  
 
The 16th ranked Thoroughbreds lost for the first time since Oct. 24, 2012 to fall to 10-1-2 and 5-1 Liberty League. The fourth ranked Herons are 12-1 and 6-0.
 
Olivia Zitoli scored her first goal of the season off a corner at 30:21 and Madeline Buckley scored off a rebound at 64:06 for William Smith.

Skidmore's best scoring chances came late in the second half. With 16:38 remaining, Kelsey Russell fired a free kick on goal from about 15 yards outside of the box, but Chelsea Dunay stepped up to make the save. Just under two minutes later, Russell again blasted a low, hard shot on goal, but Dunay once again came up with the stop.
 
The Herons outshot the Thoroughbreds 17-12 and had an 8-3 corner advantage.
 
Gab Lawrence kept Skidmore in the game with six saves.
 
The Thoroughbreds host St. Lawrence on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.
