Skidmore sails into Liberty League championship game

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College field hockey team advanced to the Liberty League championship game with a 4-0 semifinal win over Vassar College, Wednesday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The 12th ranked Thoroughbreds will host William Smith in Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m.

Skidmore (16-3) had won seven straight and avenged an early season 2-1 road loss to Vassar.  The Brewers finish at 11-7.

The win was the 200th at Skidmore for Thoroughbred coach Beth Hallenbeck.  One of the sport's mentors, she has a 200-57 (.778) record in 13 seasons at Skidmore and an overall mark of 270-135 (.667), ranking 15th all-time for Division III coaches.

Vassar came out strong, nearly scoring just 1:23 into the game. Thoroughbred goalie Haley McDougall made a save on a point-blank shot by Caroline Stanton to kill the threat.

Skidmore moved the ball up the field and Pauline Searles found Sam Skott alone in front for a 1-0 lead.  That would be the only scoring of the first half. Both goalies came up big, with Vassar goalie Maggie Brelis keeping her team in the game with nine saves. McDougall stopped three shots.

The Thoroughbreds made it 2-0 early in the second when Searles scored on a high shot from the left side.  The Brewers came right back and thought they got on the board, but Jenn Hanks came from nowhere to make a huge defensive save on Tina Caso's shot, to keep it 2-0.

Skidmore tacked on two goals late. Krista Lamoreaux scored her sixth of the season at 62:34 and Hanks made it 4-0 with her fourth of the year at 65:58.

The Thoroughbreds had a 28-7 shot and 15-4 corner advantage. McDougall had five saves for the shutout.  Brelis finished with 17 saves.

Skidmore has won four of the past five Liberty League championships.
