Skidmore falls in to #17 St. Lawrence in Liberty League Final

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team search for the program's first Liberty League title fell just short, as it was edged 3-1 by #17 St. Lawrence University in the Liberty League Final, Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster.

St. Lawrence took advantage of its first scoring chance of the game, taking a 1-0 lead at 8:15.

Liberty League Tournament MVP Andrew Bednarsky threaded a perfect through ball between Thoroughbred defenders to a cutting Jamal Samaroo, who laced a low shot past Skidmore keeper Eli Kisselbach.

The Thoroughbreds responded before halftime, as Nick Masiero tallied the equalizer at 37:28 off a feed from Brock Bakewell.

Bakewell headed a ball across the six-yard box, and Masiero easily slotted home a strike after St. Lawrence keeper Aaron Costello collided with a Saints defender.

St. Lawrence picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, and nearly scored with 28:50 remaining, but Kisselbach was quick off his line to intercept Morgan Smith's cross.

The Saints continued to push on, and finally found the game-winner at 64:07.

Mark Provost delivered a ball into the box and Bednarsky chipped a shot past Kisselbach for his seventh goal of the season.

The goal swung all of the momentum in St. Lawrence's favor, as they created several more quality bids before Smith put the game away with an insurance goal in the 86th minute.

Provost registered his second assist of the game, sending Smith into the box with speed on a 1-on-1 with the keeper, which he finished for the 3-1 lead to clinch the Liberty League Tournament title.

St. Lawrence outshot Skidmore 8-2 in the second half, and each team had one corner kick in the half.  Kisselbach finished with four saves in the loss, while Costello closed with two stops for the Saints.

The Liberty League All-Tournament Team was comprised of St. Lawrence's Harry Copeland, Jamal Samaroo and Aaron Costello, Skidmore's Gildas Girimana, Adam Beek and Brock Bakewell, Vassar's Juliano Pereira and Tom Wiechert and Rensselaer's Matt Koziol and Jared Doolan.

The Thoroughbreds (12-6-2) can still qualify for the NCAA National Tournament with at large bid. The tournament field will be announced Monday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
