Late goal lifts Skidmore

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Robby Smukler's tally in the 84th minute propelled the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win against the MCLA Trailblazers, Tuesday at Wachenheim field.

Brock Bakewell's team-leading sixth goal of the season broke the deadlock 29 seconds into the second half after a first half in which the Thoroughbreds controlled play.

Bakewell fought off his defender and tucked a strike inside the left post after Nick Martinelli floated a ball over the top.

Dylan Pereira brought the Trailblazers level in the 69th minute after a scramble in the Skidmore box left him with an open net.

The Thoroughbreds continued to press with the game tied at 1-1 and were nearly rewarded when Smukler saw his shot from 18 yards deflect out off the left post.

Smukler's first goal of the season came minutes later, as he calmly slotted home a strike on a breakaway. Adam Beek threaded a perfectly weighted pass behind MCLA's defense and Smukler raced onto the loose ball, burying his shot inside the left post.

Skidmore outshot MCLA 33-4 and had a 4-1 edge in corners. Danny Ebenstein made two saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Trailblazers goalkeeper Matt Robinson stopped eight shots.

Skidmore travels to Vassar College for a Liberty League matchup Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m.
