Skidmore pulls away from Bard for win

Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's basketball team outscored Bard 37-29 in the second half to pull away for a 62-50 Liberty League win, Saturday afternoon.

Leading 29-26 at the half, the Thoroughbreds (10-13, 5-9 Liberty) opened the second on a 20-8 run capped by a Migle Vilunatie jumper. The Raptors (1-22, 0-14) cut the lead to eight, but Skidmore sealed the win as Jordyn Wartts scored five-straight points as part an 8-0 run to make it 57-41 in the closing minutes.

Angela Botiba recorded her third straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Wartts added 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals, Lindsey Davis tallied 12 points and Molly McLaughlin chipped in with eight points and seven assists.

The Raptors jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but Davis sparked a 16-2 Thoroughbreds run, knocking down a three from the corner. Bard used five unanswered points from Bianka Bell to reduce the deficit to three at 22-19 and after Davis converted on another three, Liz Freud hit a jumper to make it 25-21 Skidmore at the half.

Warrts helped the Thoroughbreds regain momentum to start the second, forcing a Raptors turnover and taking the ball down the floor for an uncontested lay up. Skidmore continued to extend its lead with Botiba, Wartts, McLaughlin and Ella Scheuerell all getting their shots to fall.

The Thoroughbreds reached their biggest lead of the game with a jumper from Vilunaite and after Bard chipped away at the lead, Wartts came up big again to help put the game out of reach, orchestrating an 8-0 run to secure the 62-50 win.

Skidmore shot 42.4-percent from the floor on 25-of-59 shooting, while holding Bard to 35-percent shooting from the field (21-60). The Thoroughbreds also held a 45-34 advantage in rebounds.

Bianka Bell scored a game-high 21 points for the Raptors to go along with eight rebounds and Liz Freud contributed 13 points and pulled down eight boards.

The Thoroughbreds take on crosstown rival Union Friday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.
