Thoroughbreds clinch playoff berth with 84-68 win over Union

Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's basketball team clinched its fifth straight Liberty League tournament berth with an 84-68 win over Union College, Friday night at the Viniar Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 16-8 overall and 10-5 in Liberty League play. Union is 9-14 and 6-9. Skidmore close out the regular season at home Saturday at 4 p.m. against RIT. The Thoroughbreds need a win and a Vassar loss to Clarkson on Saturday to secure home court for the league semifinals.
 
Skidmore turned a one point, 38-37, halftime lead into a 16 point win by shooting 69.6 percent (16-23) from the floor in the second half. The Thoroughbreds shot 55% for the game and had a 32-28 rebounding edge.
 
Erik Sanders scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, hitting five three-pointers. He also had a game-high seven rebounds and was one of four Thorougbreds scoring in double figures. Connor Merrill scored 19 points and had four blocks, while Aldin Medunjanin added 11 points and three assists and Perun Kovacevic scored 10 points and had two blocks.
 
Terell Winney and William Hython both led Union with 14 points. Deshon Burgess scored 12 and Kevin Weckworth added 11.
 
The win completed the season sweep for the Thoroughbreds who beat the Dutchmen 103-58 on Jan. 18.
