Thoroughbreds pull away for key Liberty League win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Allison Byrne and Tyler Phillips scored four straight goals in a nine-minute span as visiting Skidmore College pulled away for a 12-8 women's lacrosse victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
 
The Yellowjackets pulled within 8-7 on a goal by Cassie Mahar with 19:50 left in the second half. Phillips scored five minutes later after a long run upfield on a counterattack. Byrne scored back to back goals, getting her first after weaving through the middle with 11:32 to go, then scoring on a quick stick less than a minute later after a pass from Brittney Dioneda. Phillips finished the flurry with a goal from the free position with 5:16 left.
 
Phillips led Skidmore (3-8 overall, 2-3 Liberty League) with four goals. Peggy Healy had two goals and one assist. Byrne had two goals. Dioneda had one goal and one assist. Emma Harris, Spencer Morgan, and Caroline Bowne scored one goal each. Nine Skidmore players had either a goal or an assist.
 
Jamie Wallisch and Mahar had two goals and one assist apiece for Rochester (5-4, 1-3 Liberty). Lauren Basil scored twice. Michelle Harrington and Kathryn Maisch had single goals. Sarah Skinner and Danielle Diacovo had one assist each.
 
In goal, Allie Sosinsky made seven saves for Skidmore and allowed eight goals in 60 minutes. Marie Prosak made nine saves for Rochester and allowed 12 goals.
 
Skidmore held a 26-23 advantage in shots. The Thoroughbreds collected 24 ground balls – seven by Paige DiAntonio – caused eight turnovers – Rachel Talanian forced three – and won 11 draw controls, seven by Bowne.
 
Rochester collected 20 ground balls. Diacovo, Prosak, and Breanna Taylor had three each. The Yellowjackets caused six turnovers, two by Wallisch. Rochester won 11 draws, three by Wallisch.
 
Harrington, Basil, and Wallisch all scored in the first eight minutes as Rochester jumped ahead, 3-0. Skidmore scored six of the next eight goals – Phillips had two – to take a 6-5 lead at halftime. Morgan's goal with 7:01 left cut the deficit to 5-4. Phillips leveled the score with 2:09 left, and Bowne scored from the free position in the final minute.
 
The lead extended to two goals twice in the second half – first by Dioneda from Healy in the first 90 seconds, then by Healy from Gubbins with just over 20 minutes to play. In between, Maisch made a weaving run through the area to pull Rochester within 7-6 at 25:03. Healy's goal pushed it to 8-6 at 20:07. Mahar shoveled the ball into the lower left hand corner 19 seconds later to get Rochester within a goal again, this time at 8-7. Phillips scored after the long counterattack run and that started the decisive spurt.
