Women's lacrosse holds off RIT

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team lacrosse team used seven unanswered goals in the first half to secure a 12-10 Liberty League road win against RIT on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the Thoroughbreds (4-9, 3-3 Liberty League) leading 12-5 lead with just over 18 minutes remaining in regulation and the Tigers (4-7, 1-4) made a late charge, scoring five straight goals to pull within two with 5:03 to play, but that is as close as they would get.

Tyler Phillips led Skidmore with six points on four goals and two assists. Emma Harris tallied three goals, Spencer Morgan scored a pair of goals and Brittney Dioneda recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Ally Sosinsky got the win in net for the Thoroughbreds, making nine saves.


Sage Sarkis paced the RIT offense with four goals, Holly Leone and Corrina Mandell each had two goals, while Ashleigh tallied a goal and an assist. Elizabeth Hughes took the loss in net for RIT, making eight saves.

Skidmore opened the scoring when Phillips converted a free position shot at 28:40 of the first half, giving the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead. RIT answered back with two straight goals from Sarkis at 23:34, and Leone at 19:59, giving them an early 2-1 lead.

Skidmore answered with seven straight goals, taking an 8-2 lead with 3:40 to play in the first half on a goal by Morgan. Phillips scored two of Skidmore's seven goals in the run. Hettel broke the run for RIT with her goal just seven seconds before halftime, cutting the Thoroughbreds lead to 8-3 at halftime.

Peggy Healy opened the second half scoring with her goal at 24:50 off feed from Dioneda. Mandell and Caruso sandwiched goals around a Skidmore tally, cutting the Thoroughbreds lead to 10-5 with 19:59 to play.

After a pair of Skidmore goals made it 12-5, RIT closed out the game scoring five straight goals, pulling to within 12-10 on Sarkis' fourth tally of the game with 5:03 to play. She scored three of the five goals for RIT down the stretch, while Mandell and Leone had the others.

The Tigers had their chances down the stretch to pull closer to Skidmore, but the Thoroughbreds were able to run out the clock and hold on for the two-goal win.
 
RIT outshot Skidmore, 26-21, while the Thoroughbreds had a 12-10 advantage in draw controls and had a 19-13 edge in ground balls. Skidmore was 4-6 on free position attempts, while the Tigers were 1-9.
 
The Thoroughbreds host Amherst College at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12.
