WBCA PRESS RELEASE
ATLANTA, Ga. – For the second season in a row, Skidmore College women's basketball junior guard
Kelly Donnelly was honored as a 2017 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III Coaches All-American, the organization announced on Friday. Donnelly, who was named as an honorable mention selection, becomes the first two-time All-American in program history.
Donnelly joins 40 outstanding student-athletes on the first team and honorable mention lists. The team was selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches throughout Division III.
"It's an incredible honor to coach one of the best players in the country in Kelly," said Skidmore women's basketball head coach
Darren Bennett. "She has grown incredibly in her three seasons as a student athlete and to be a part of that growth is something special. To be an All-American in any sport at any level is a very big honor, but with over 430 schools to be listed as one of the best 40 players in the country is something else. Kelly has improved a different aspect of her game every season and continues to work tirelessly on her game. She plays both ends of the floor and is one of the most overall talented players I've ever been fortunate enough to coach at any level."
The 2016-17 Liberty League's Player of the Year, Donnelly led the Thoroughbreds, starting in all 26 games. The junior led the league in scoring (20.9) and rebounds (11.0), was second in steals per game (2.7), and was third in field goal percentage (.465). Donnelly also cracked a pair of Thoroughbred records, first scoring her 1,000th point on Jan. 10, becoming the 14th Thoroughbred and the third junior to do so, then she set a new program record for points in a season, finishing with 543. Donnelly will enter her senior year with an incredible 1,283 points and 776 rebounds.
In just three seasons, Donnelly has become perhaps the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She became the third women's basketball student-athlete to earn two Liberty League Player of the Year nods in 2017 after also winning the award last season and is a two-time member of the D3hoops.com All-East Region Team. In 2014-15, Donnelly was named as the Liberty League's Co-Rookie of the Year, and she's excelled in the classroom as a two-time member of the league's All-Academic Team.
"With one year left to her college career and two All-American seasons to her name I know she will be aiming to make her senior year her very best for her and her teammates," added Bennett. "This kid is a winner, one of the very best ever."
