NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES

Skidmore College has nominated senior field hockey defender Becca Halter for the 2016-17 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. This prestigious award recognizes the nation's top senior female student-athlete for her achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.

The nomination is the latest in a string of awards from the talented senior. In May, Halter graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in environmental science. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Halter earned the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Zag Sports Division III National Scholar-Athlete award this year. She was also named as a 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America selection, and has been named to the Thoroughbred Society in all eight semesters at Skidmore.

Halter also received the Skidmore Tim Brown Scholar Athlete Award and the Skidmore Senior Scholar Athlete Award.

On the field, Halter was a three-time All-Liberty League selection, earning first team honors in 2016. She was also named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region team three times, and was recently honored as a third team All-America selection. This was after a season in which she tallied three defensive saves and 13 points on four goals and five assists in 22 games played. She helped captain the Thoroughbreds to a Liberty League title and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

In the community, Halter has worked with Saratoga Bridges and has volunteered with the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, the E.N. Huyck Preserve, the Prairie Ridge Ecostation, and the Adirondack Mountain Club. She's also served as a peer tutor on campus for three years.

Now in its 27th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award draws nominees from each of the three divisions. Halter is one of seven nominees from Liberty League institutions and one of 197 from Division III schools.

Now that the nomination process is complete, each conference will select up to two nominees to advance in the process. Then the NCAA will select the top 30 honorees, 10 from each division. In September, the NCAA will announce the nine finalists for the award (three from each division), revealing the NCAA Woman of the Year on Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.
